Water Outside vs Inside the Cell
Cells resemble tiny balloons floating in a salty bath. Sodium concentration tends to be higher outside; potassium dominates inside. That gradient — maintained by pumps using cellular energy — draws water where it is needed for chemical reactions, protein folding, and waste removal.
When someone drinks large volumes of demineralised water without replacing electrolytes, the gradient can flatten slightly. The body may respond by retaining fluid in extracellular spaces, which shows up as ankle puffiness or a bloated abdomen despite faithful bottle tracking.
The problem is not always too little drinking. Sometimes it is drinking without the mineral context that escorts water through cell membranes. Distilled or heavily purified water used exclusively can contribute to that imbalance over time, especially combined with a low-mineral diet.
